Hanging ceiling on 2 by 4s

I need to lower my basement ceiling height about an inch due to plumbing. So I would like to run 2 by 4s across my floor joist to lower my ceiling than hang sheetrock. I don’t know if this will be strong enough. Can I hang 5/8 sheet rock on 2 by 4s in my basement ceiling?

Sorry for the late response. If you have not taken on the project already. You would be able to use 2x4s if you secured them to the floor joist. Make sure that they are properly secured to the the joist. Remember how much weight we are talking about per sheet. I would also use an extra screw per row and I would use 3 inch screws to attach the studding to the joist. I would ensure you are confident that they are securely fastened of the studs to the joist and treat it like a normal joist. If I am understanding what you are undertaking. If I miss understood or you have any other questions feel free to ask. Always consult your local building codes.
