Taper to cut joint or cut to cut?

I understand the value of having tapered joints however the project iam going to be doing is replacing the bottom two feet of drywall in a basement so I will have a butt joint all the way around. So given the fact that the top piece will be cut should I use the tapered edge for the bottom piece or should I cut it. What’s easier to tape and finish cut to cut or cut to taper?

Dry wall off cuts placed within the wall

Having removed the existing dry wall, I found pieces of dry wall off cuts placed behind the existing dry wall, extending from the floor upwards for about 18-24″ between the vertical framing pieces of 2×4. Do you have any idea as to why was this done?

Paint Ready Finish

I’ve recently had approx 2500 sq ft of drywall installed in a basement reno. The contract stated the drywall to be completed to “paint ready finish”. My painter is requesting additional fees since the new drywall wasn’t blended into existing drywall along the stairs that have a sand/plaster texture. Painter is stating paint ready should require only painting and drywallers are stating blending the finishes and any texturing isn’t part of a paint ready finish and actually the painters job. Can someone please confirm? Thanks

When to use a block/nailer for ceiling drywall?

Wondering if there are any guidelines as to when you should provide a block/nailer for drywall on a ceiling. I ask because my ceiling is framed 24″ oc and it seems that one screw every 24″ around the perimeter might be too little. Is that assumption correct? Or, should I put a nailer in between the joists especially around the perimeter? None are there now. Thanks!

Repair water damaged drywall

How can I repair the water damage to this drywall ceiling? The source of the water leak has been fixed. There is blown-in insulation above it. I’ll try to upload a picture from photobucket.

Can you upload the picture of your drywall. Which side of the drywall is damaged. My advice is this totally change your wall.

Seam cracks, how to fix them so they don’t crack again?

Finishing off a basement and the people who hung the sheetrock didn’t stagger wall seams. I have put mud on sanded and now textured. The problem is when I came back the next day there was hair line cracks in the 8′ butt seams. Is there any way to fix it so it doesn’t crack again?

1)They may have finished the joints without taping them first. You may have to go back and tape them to prevent cracks. If the mud isn’t on too thick you could try taping over what is there and feathering the joints out about 12 to 14 inches on each side. If you are good at mudding, you could put a skim coat over everything for a smooth finish.
Once a joint is “finished” without tape, whatever you do is going to be a fair amount of work.. I really don’t know of a fix without using tape. Good luck.
2)This is a never ending battle. I unfortunately would say you will fight. I do have one alternative that might work. If it happens again there is a product called elasto patch which is a drywall mud that has flex. Using this product would allow for some movement without cracking. This may be a solution verse redoing the drywall. I would also recommend adding a few additional screws to try and limit the movement. I hope this helps.

Screws

How many screws do you use per drywall sheet?

I use 5 per stud personally on 16 inch on center studs that is 6 studs per sheet which comes out to 30 screws per sheet.
